What is Japandi Spirit Journey?

Beyond the Sightseeing: A Living Hida.

Hida Takayama is widely loved as a gem of the Japanese Alps, known for its preserved historic streets. But the true soul of this land isn't found in a guidebook; it lies in the quiet, daily rhythms that have sustained us for centuries.

I invite you to step away from the crowded checklists and into the authentic, ordinary beauty of a life lived close to nature. Here, 150-year-old wooden houses aren't museums—they are homes where ancient wisdom meets contemporary peace.

This is more than a tour. It is a journey of dialogue and presence. By immersing yourself in the "now" of Hida—touching the wood, breathing the mountain air, and sharing honest conversations—you will find space to reconnect with the world, with others, and most importantly, with yourself.

The Philosophy

What is "Japandi Spirit"?
— A Bridge Between Stillness and Warmth.

Japandi is more than a design trend; it is a philosophy of living. It is the soulful intersection where the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-sabi (finding beauty in imperfection) meets the Scandinavian concept of Hygge (the cozy contentment found in simple moments).

In Hida Takayama, this spirit takes the form of "Yohaku"—the intentional blank space. It is the choice to value quality over quantity and a deep connection to the natural world.

The Destination

Hida Takayama: The Soul of the Japanese Alps.

Located in the heart of Gifu Prefecture, Hida Takayama is often called "Little Kyoto" for its beautifully preserved Edo-period streets. But look beyond the architecture, and you will find a land of pristine water, deep forests, and a community that has lived in harmony with nature for centuries.

Easily accessible by train or bus from Nagoya, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, it is a gateway to a Japan that time forgot—where ever-changing seasons paint a new masterpiece on the canvas of our mountains, and the air is filled with the scent of cedar and sake.

Meet Your Guide & Friend: Yumi Ishihara

A Bridge Between Cultures and Souls.

I was born in Osaka and studied International Relations and Cultural Anthropology. These fields taught me a lifelong lesson: how to look deeply at the invisible threads that connect different cultures and how people find meaning in their daily lives.

After working as a brand consultant in the busy city of Tokyo, my journey took a pivotal turn toward Finland. I spent years researching Finland’s well-being and lifelong education, looking for a way to harmonize Nordic "Hygge" with my own Japanese roots.

Today, my husband and I live in a 150-year-old farmhouse here in Hida Takayama. My perspective is shaped by Japan, Northern Europe, and a deep love for all of Asia. Having lived in Taiwan and South Korea, I cherish the unique and interconnected spirits of the East.

As a native Japanese speaker fluent in English, I am here to be your cultural bridge. We won't just visit famous spots; we will share honest conversations—from the anthropology of "Yohaku" to the simple joy of local sake. I look forward to welcoming you to Hida as a friend.

For your convenience, I provide pickup and drop-off service if your accommodation or designated meeting point is located within Takayama City or Hida City (such as Hida Furukawa). Please provide the address of your stay when booking.

While Hida is a rural area with limited specialized dining options, I will do my best to support your needs. Whether you are vegan, gluten-free, or have specific allergies, please let me know in the inquiry form so we can discuss what is possible and find suitable local spots or supermarket items together.

Yes! As a "guide and friend," I welcome families with children. The home visit and nature walks are especially popular with kids. We can adjust the pace of the journey to match your family’s rhythm.

Since each journey is bespoke, I recommend booking at least 2–4 weeks in advance, especially during the peak seasons (Spring and Autumn). However, feel free to check for last-minute availability via the form.
